But the more interesting part is the philosophical discovery: If a piece of code can be generated from scratch by a machine that is not creative, then any comparable piece of code is also not creative. In other words, only the very first time a new type of code or algorithm is written can there be creativity - if one follows your argument that LLM machines cannot be creative. This essentially raises the bar for copyright, and makes an objective test of what is copyrightable or not possible. If you can describe something in a prompt, and get a result of comparable function and quality to a human written version, that code is not creative either, therefor not copyrightable.

Obviously we’re not quite there yet, but the more LLMs improve, the less code becomes copyrightable.

Coding becomes pure craftsmanship, like cutting and sanding some lumber and nailing it together to build a shed.

So if we were a rational and logical species, the overwhelming amount of copyright would be deleted and become public domain. Because it is now worth only the cheap solar power needed to generate it.

You can also set a LLMs to completely rewriting code snippets from scratch to perform the same function, writing and fulfilling the same unit tests. Not just rewrite in a different language or changing variable names. Basically the transformative abilities of LLMs can make copyright obsolete.

Not true, this does not occur frequently. This study and software LiCoEval from 2024 found 0.88% to 2.01% of code “strikingly similar to existing open-source implementations”. Afaik this is mostly textbook examples, snippets from stack overflow snippets or common github repositories, often replicated api examples and language boilerplate. How you prompt and refine also matters, and for generating novel code or business logic the LLM simply cannot use memorized snippets.

Presumably since then LLMs have worked to reduce that number of memorized code. Since LLMs cannot memorize all their training data, that number is limited. LiCoEval can find the often memorized examples and train to remove them, or suppress them, or they find other ways to reduce direct reproduction from memorization. For example it would be possible to do what malus.sh does with all the training data. Then it cannot memorize copyrighted code.

So for a model that came out 2026 this already small number might not be that relevant anymore.

I never implied this definition of fascism is the consensus. It is however undeniably clear and concise. There have been an actual and real problems with defining fascism, like that 12 criteria thing is pretty useless in normal political discourse.

Definitions of fascism has always been problematic because it is a chimera. Personally I really like this one: Fascism is the moral belief in inequality based on identity, like e.g. ethnicity or gender. It is a bit more wide ranging definition, but pretty simple and clear. For example a democracy where women are not allowed to vote and are exploited as cheap labor at home would be fascist.

Contrast that with neoliberalism, which is the moral belief in inequality based on class / wealth. Which explains why they ally so easily.

We could work on improving technology for building high density housing, producing food and clean water with little space and energy and then exporting that into desperate areas. We could massively uplift the quality of life all around the globe while spending much elss energy and resources. With automation and AI this could be even easier. But practically this won’t happen. We can’t even stop the US imperialist wars and conflicts that are producing so many refugees.

None of this is really surprising though, backlash is to be expected. Most people in most countries are against mass immigration, which does not make one a fascist. Sweden is now 8.1% Muslim which is a lot to ask of people. Since 1990 it rose from <1% and still seems to be rising. Most are not actually practicing Islam though, only like 25% or so according to the numbers on wikipedia. Which also has been my anecdotal experience in my country.

The issue is that the large parties do not budge on the neoliberal idea of immigration, to fuel economic growth and depressing wages. So only extremists or fringe parties remain to be voted on. Some people simply feel very strongly about “this is our land”. And in most countries this is completely different than the mostly empty / very low population density USA which is traditionally an immigration country. It is not just a question of ideology. People have a right to feel less than holy thoughts about preserving their homeland. My point is that ignoring these feelings is irresponsible politics. Especially in times of looming economic decline and coming mass refugees from climate change.

Of course, Örebro is not acceptable because it advocates fascist policies and should be outlawed and all supporters shunned.

Chaos is a ladder lol. I suspect AI struck at an especially bad time. With smartphones, cloud, blockchain and other hype bullshit it didn’t matter that much. But currently economy is illusionary, supported by printing money, overheating, and massive amounts of money seek ROI. All this since 2008. The billions of economic power slammed into AI is being spend on people going around preaching the gospel of AI to businesses. And this was before the technbros backing Trump have moved to trying to purposefully wreck and scam the US and global economy to usher in a new world order from the ashes.

So in some ways technology hype is normal, but the current environment might influence the mental state of people drastically.

I quite like LLMs for what they are. I wish we could see this amount of investment in technological development and hardware breakthroughs without the AI psychosis and insane race to adopt it immediately.

With that said, the amount of societal destruction caused by it, I do wish it hadn’t been invented.

One stupid idea I have is “Only a good AI in a browser can stop a bad AI in the internet”. Not sure about the technical feasibility, but terniary models can pack 27b LLMs into a smartphone. Imagine we could actually filter out a lot of disinformation and brainworms. Or have an LLM parse all comments by a suspected bad faith actor and make an estimative judgement on it. Make the internet usable again lol. Maybe it can be used as a powerful tool for good. But fuckai cuts off any discussion about this. The immediate backlash to an AI model inside Firefox was near absolute.
