BETA Technologies has secured a landmark authorisation from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct flight operations with prospective customers and other key stakeholders using its all-electric ALIA VTOL aircraft, known as the A250.

Announced on 21 October, the approval is the first Special Airworthiness Certificate for market surveys granted to an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

It allows BETA to demonstrate the aircraft to operators and other stakeholders, helping them assess its potential applications as the company progresses towards full certification and commercial operations.

The milestone builds on BETA’s earlier FAA authorisation for its conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) aircraft and reflects the company’s growing operational experience across both platforms

“Our language is one of the biggest things that most First Nations across the country are losing,” said Wiikwemkoong Chief Tim Ominika. “We will have our knowledge keepers, our language speakers who may be moving on to the spirit world, but their legacy is still going to be protected for many years to come by having our own data systems in place and protecting that.”

The idea of digital sovereignty has gained momentum in places like Europe, where leaders are wary of the widespread influence of American Big Tech. For the Wiikwemkoong First Nation and other Indigenous communities, it is also about asserting authority over their own information after historically being excluded from its collection and use by colonizers.

This is a common problem for incumbent demagogues. In opposition, simple solutions are proposed for complex problems: tariffs as the remedy for industrial decline; expelling illegal immigrants as the answer to every social and economic grievance; trusting in the leader’s judgment as the answer to everything else.

In office, those mechanisms fail to deliver the promised benefits. Someone needs to be blamed. The categories of undesirable element grow. Media, universities, courts and opposition parties are called crooked or treasonous. But purges disrupt the smooth running of a country. They are bad for the economy. This is how the insecure leader goes through the gears of tyranny. A craving for control generates dissent, which is attacked as a menace to society, requiring more draconian law enforcement. When that provokes more determined opposition, the dissenters are denounced as extremists who jeopardise public safety.
