It’s more like 50-60% and it depends on who’s doing the breathing - the vast majority of O2 generated by phytoplankton doesn’t become atmospheric O2 - it stays in the ocean. So yeah, us terrestrials would see terrestrial 02 producers as our glam rock stars.

Wouldn’t the ocean drain oxygen produced by trees if phytoplankton didn’t exist? It seems to me that both move oxygen into the same system, earth.

If phytoplankton didn’t exist, the things removing pure 02 from the ocean through respiration would die. In which case, the ocean would reach O2 solubility equilibrium at a fraction of a percent of atmospheric O2 and would stop uptaking it because there’s nothing left to continue converting it to CO2.
Correct, but phytoplankton also is dying because global and ocean warming.

Trees don’t actually produce that much excess oxygen at all. If I remember correctly, only about ~1/1000 molecules of O2 generated by a given tree actually ever leave its local environment. The rest gets used up by the tree itself and surrounding wildlife
Shallow underwater breath, since phytoplankton require sunlight. Less sunlight can penetrate into deeper water

Plastic can be produced from renewable sources… we choose oil because its cheap and mostly a byproduct of the energy industry.

Ideally one would walk everywhere or take public transport, and in Europe at least a lot of people do…
But even then that’s not always feasible - especially if you live in a country that has actively sabotage both those methods of transport - so making the cars they drive able to operate off of renewable energy (dependent on their source of electricity) is better than ranting like an old man and doing nothing
