Ukraine has, single-handedly, changed the way modern warfare is conducted. The days of large land wars, preceded by artillery and followed by tanks, is over. Those days were kinda over but Ukraine finished them off.

That would make one hell of a drone show. At least make a big “fuck Putin” sign with a million of them over Moscow before an attack.

Russia about Ukraine in 2022: Ukraine is really just part of Russia.
Ukraine about Russia in 2026: Russia is really just Ukraine’s drone testing range.

7 daysNever ask zelensky why the Ukraine population is 50% of prewar. Putin kind of solving his goal of improving Russia human resources
- chaogomu@lemmy.worldEnglish7 days
Who knew that 5 million was 50% of 44 million?
And that’s the total population change, including deaths and all migration, regardless of destination country.

Solving its goal by killing their colonised people and using brain drain successfully? Great strategy.

Lots of refugees from the Ukraine went to Russia. Well over a million, 1.3 million in 2023. Probably more in 2026, but there is no data.

At least fewer people will die? (I hope)
- eleitl@lemmy.zipEnglish7 days
No, these are cheap drones from chinese components that hunt and kill individual people and vehicles.
- esc@piefed.socialEnglish7 days
By now they aren’t made from chinese components much, roughly 30% or something like that, mostly smd components.
But yeah more people are dying. They are extremely lethal.
- eleitl@lemmy.zipEnglish7 days
Both sides are using such drones, in huge numbers. But only one side deliberately targets civilians with them.

7 daysReminds me of this short from a while back. It didn’t quite predict the focus on smaller, cheaper drones, but still pretty good:

This is also some good context about drones being the future of warfare, including in space. Star Wars having fighters duke it out with human pilots will almost certainly not be a thing:

I wonder if they are calling it the “drone deal” just to get under Trump’s skin. After all, he views the world as a zero-sum game, and the US as competing with Europe. So, any deal thar Europe “gets” is one less deal for the US.
Ukraine’s territorial integrity shouldn’t be subject to “deals”, but here we are.
- Whostosay@sh.itjust.worksEnglish7 days
All they need is a cheap gold coated medal or trophy for best drone deal to give to not him and they’ll secure funding for a decade.
