A compilation of a series of lectures by Liu Shaoqi (Mao Zedong’s number-two man and the President of Communist China) at the Yunan Institute of Marxism-Leninism in 1939, this book was more popular in Communist China than the works of Chairman Mao! For decades it was required reading for all party cadre on discipline and individual self-cultivation.

“A spectre is haunting Europe - the spectre of Communism.” So begins one of history’s most important documents, a work of such magnitude that it has forever changed not only the scope of world politics, but indeed the course of human civilization. The Communist Manifesto was written in Friedrich Engels’s clear, striking prose and declared the earth-shaking ideas of Karl Marx. Upon publication in 1848, it quickly became the credo of the poor and oppressed who longed for a society “in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all.”

The Communist Manifesto contains the seeds of Marx’s more comprehensive philosophy, which continues to inspire influential economic, political, social, and literary theories. But the Manifesto is most valuable as an historical document, one that led to the greatest political upheavals of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and to the establishment of the Communist governments that until recently ruled half the globe.

The ideas that are expressed in the essay have a very thorough economic contemplation about them as he put aside some of his materialist conceptions of history for the time being. This essay did, however, start to show an increased scientific rationale on his ideas of “alienated labor,” which in Marx’s perspective would eventually lead to the proletarian revolution.

Wage-Labor and Capital is considered by Marxists as an “in-depth economic and scientific observation on how capitalist economy works, why it was exploitative, and ultimately why it would eventually implode from within”.

Some of the main topics that the essay examines are about labour power and labour, and how labour power becomes a commodity. It also presents the Labour Theory of Value that further develops the distinct differences between labour and labour power. The essay also examines the commodity and how the economic principles of supply and demand affect the pricing of certain commodities. Beyond that the essay explores how capital and capitalism do not service any purpose other than to gain more of it, which Marx presents as an illogical method of living one’s life.

In this classic work, Friedrich Engels lays out the basics of the Marxist understanding of capitalism.

Marxism is not a doctrine that came out of nowhere, he explains, but a theory based on the movement of the working class against its exploitation and oppression at the hands of the capitalists.

Engels sketches the history of socialist thought prior to Karl Marx. He outlines how Marxism goes beyond simply imagining a better world by investigating the dynamics of capitalism, and building a case for the ability of workers themselves to build a new society.

This seminal text argues that the perceived passivity of the poor is the direct result of economic, social and political domination. The book suggests that in some countries the oppressors use the ‘piggy bank’ system - treating students as passive, empty vessels - to preserve their authority and maintain a culture of silence. Through cooperation and dialogue, Freire suggests, the authoritarian teacher-pupil model can be replaced with critical thinking so that the student becomes co-creator of knowledge. Crucial to Freire’s argument is the belief that every human being, no matter how impoverished or illiterate, can develop an awareness of self, and the right to be heard.

“State and Revolution” (1917) describes the role of the State in society, the necessity of proletarian revolution, and the theoretic inadequacies of social democracy in achieving revolution. It describes the inherent nature of the State as a tool for class oppression, a creation born of one social class’s desire to control all other social classes. Whether a dictatorship or a democracy, the State remains in the control of the ruling class. Even in a democratic capitalist republic, the ruling class will never willingly relinquish political power, maintaining it via various strategies. Hence, according to this view, communist revolution is the sole remedy for the abolition of the state.

During the First World War, Lenin found himself isolated, but he was not afraid to fight against the stream. He dedicated all his strength to educating and training the Bolsheviks on the basis of the genuine ideas of Marxism. His masterpiece, Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism, is an immortal monument to his work in the vital field of theory.

No book has ever explained the phenomena of modern capitalism better. Indeed, all of Lenin’s predictions concerning the concentration of capital, the dominance of the banks and finance capital, the growing antagonism between nation states and the inevitability of war arising out of the contradictions of imperialism have been shown to be true by the entire history of the last 100 years.

Using the empirical evidence and statistics at his disposal, Lenin explains that, in the stage of imperialist monopoly capitalism, the entire economy is under the domination of the banks and finance capital. Today, over 100 years after it was first published, this domination is 100 times greater.

Description: This is a very early (1847) FAQ file for Communism, written by Karl Marx’s main collaborator, Frederick Engels. Engels had previously written “Draft of the Communist Confession of Faith,” which uses a similar, catechistic format of questions and answers, but this document is better-developed. However, Engels still did not find it satisfying and wrote to Marx, "“Think over the Confession of Faith a bit. I believe we had better drop the catechism form and call the thing: Communist Manifesto. As more or less history has got to be related in it, the form it has been in hitherto is quite unsuitable. I am bringing what I have done here with me; it is in simple narrative form, but miserably worded, in fearful haste. …”
