Though it’s traditionally meant ‘last in a progression or series,’ as Merriam-Webster puts it, the word ultimate has been more often used in recent decades to mean ‘the best or most extreme of its kind.’ The name of a recently launched digital archive performs a rare inversion, labeling as last a creation marked not by finality but extremity. It certainly looks like Taylor Swift, the biggest pop star on planet Earth, is going to marry Travis Kelce, her three-time Super Bowl champion beau, at Madison Square Garden on Friday.

While neither Ms. Swift nor Mr. Kelce has directly confirmed that their nuptials will take place there, over the past week, my imagination has been reeling with the potential for matrimonial stagecraft that only Ms. Swift could pull off. How many dresses will she wear, and what will they look like? Will Jack Antonoff be a bridesman? Will she perform? Who else will get up onstage? Paul McCartney? James Taylor? MGMT?

And yet, as I consider the expected event, I feel … well … “depressed” is the word.

Hiya mods! The men’s World Cup is once again upon us which means that drunken soccer fans have spilled out of containment and into our streets and online communities. If this is fun for you and your community, wonderful! It is (ostensibly) a tournament for the whole world, and lots of different communities are likely to want to have different kinds of discussions about it. On the other hand, if this is not fun for you and your community, I would like to invite you to send them over to !worldcup@lemmy.world. I’ve put a fresh coat of paint on the place, and primed the pump with some posts, so hopefully it’ll help redirect posting from communities that want to discuss other stuff in peace.

I will also mention the great folks over at !football@sopuli.xyz , which is the best general soccer community I’ve seen in my time in the threadiverse (and there have been many), though I won’t speak on their behalf, in case they don’t want a big influx of people who seem to mostly want to post about how much Trump’s World Cup sucks (valid).

Taylor Swift has been named the richest female musician ever, with her fortune reaching an estimated $2 billion (£1.58 billion), according to the Forbes Iconoclast 50 list.

The updated valuation places the US singer-songwriter at the top of global music wealth rankings, driven by earnings from The Eras Tour, her re-recorded catalogue strategy, and the long-running battle over ownership of her early master recordings.
