South Africa is once again planning a major expansion of nuclear power. After more than 40 years of relying on Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, the government is now targeting 5,200 MW of new nuclear power by 2039, with potential projects at Duynefontein, Thyspunt and Bantamsklip, while South Africa is also exploring a new generation of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). In this video, we take a deep look at the current and future state of nuclear power in South Africa, from Koeberg’s ageing reactors and their licence extensions, to the proposed 4,000 MW Duynefontein project, the potential 5,200 MW Thyspunt nuclear power station, and the revival of South Africa’s Pebble Bed Modular Reactor technology. After decades of proposals that never made it to construction, South Africa’s nuclear programme is entering a new phase. The question is whether these projects will actually get built, and whether nuclear should become one of the foundations of South Africa’s future electricity system.

What do you think? Should South Africa build more nuclear power, or should the country focus primarily on renewables, storage and grid infrastructure? Let me know in the comments.

After decades of decline, vandalism, abandoned railway lines and the collapse of passenger and freight rail, South Africa’s railway system is finally showing signs of recovery. In the final episode of my Ghost Railways of South Africa series, we look at what could come next and whether South Africa can actually rebuild its railway network for the future. From Transnet’s freight recovery and the opening of the rail network to private operators, to PRASA’s passenger rail recovery and the return of more than 100 million annual commuter journeys, there are some genuinely encouraging developments happening. We also look at the Draft National Rail Master Plan, which proposes a completely different way of thinking about South African rail: treating railway infrastructure as a national asset, separating infrastructure management from train operations, focusing investment on the most important corridors, and potentially transitioning parts of the national network towards standard gauge and higher-speed passenger rail. But what happens to the thousands of kilometres of railway that aren’t economically viable for traditional freight or commuter services? Could some of South Africa’s abandoned and underused railways find a second life through tourism and heritage rail? We look at the incredible projects already happening across the country, including Ceres Rail, the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, Umgeni Steam Railway, New Cape Central Railway, Atlantic Rail, Rovos Rail, The Blue Train, Sandstone Estates and Kruger Shalati. And ultimately, we ask the biggest question: Is South Africa’s railway system really dead or are we witnessing the beginning of a railway renaissance? There is still an enormous amount of work to do. Billions will be required, thousands of kilometres of railway remain in poor condition, and problems with signalling, maintenance, security, governance and infrastructure haven’t disappeared. But for the first time in a very long time, there are signs that South African rail isn’t simply getting worse.

I’ve been to spar and checkers over the last while and I shit you not, I’ve been hearing them play AI generated music. I try to shazam the songs to see if it actually picks up anything but the music isn’t even recognized. It sounds like the song was generated off of Suno 3.5 or some shit.
I guess it’s cheaper to do that than to pay for licenses for actual songs…

I created a community and selected searching for moderators option, and I see the little message on the community saying “This community needs more moderators. Contact the piefed.social admin team to apply.”, and some other communities have messages displaying similar. Would it not make more sense for this to tell the user to contact the community’s moderators? If not, would it make more sense for there to instead be a button that links to a way to contact the admins themselves if that is necessary?

Hi friends,
So i’m on the https://piefed.social/c/burnout feed at the moment, and someone posted https://piefed.social/post/2278925, but I can’t seem to see it on the feed. I only see the post that I made.
Is there maybe a moderation queue I am unaware about that requires me to first verify the post before it is publically displayed?
Help here would be greatly appreciated <3

EDIT: Ohhh you know what… I seemed to have forgotten that I activated the setting that hides posts I’ve already interacted with. my bad… ehhheh.
