Why go to school if you’re just going to use AI? What are you paying for?
You could also ask what good is a school that only teaches you things that can be reliably answered by AI.
Or, if you prefer, why is the school curriculum defining and evaluating progress in a way that can be passed by an AI.
IMHO it shows that certain subjects rely way too much on rote memorization and loose cognitive associations and should maybe take this moment to rethink their approach.
douglasg14b@lemmy.worldEnglish
3 monthsLiterally all knowledge and understanding requires memorization of some sort and the understanding of reality and prior information.
It is difficult to fathom the level of wrong in this comment.
Here’s the thing people who lack knowledge, critical thinking and understanding about the how the world works. Still form opinions and makes decisions as if they did have that knowledge and understanding. Which negatively affects everyone else.

Literally all knowledge and understanding requires memorization of some sort and the understanding of reality and prior information.
But is that what schools are teaching? When’s the last time you heard of a school that prioritizes the way its students think and focuses on improving their reasoning and cognitive skills?
I’m not knocking memorization but it shouldn’t be the main or only token by which learning is evaluated.

University degrees serve at least two functions.
One function is a sort of guarantee that you have the knowledge and skills of the particular degrees you obtain.
The other function is to show that you are the kind of person who gets university degrees… whether that is because you are competent or just that you come from a socio-economic background that values university degrees nad can afford them.
For that second function cheating matters very little if you don’t get caught.
For the first function, it might also not be super relevant. I had to take a humanities class for my computer science degree. If I had cheated on the theater exam it would not have made me a worse programmer. 😄
- Eximius@lemmy.worldEnglish3 months
To your last paragraph: Yes and no. It’s not only the material that is taught, but also the approaches that you learn while dealing with it.
If you cheated on the theater exam, and masterfully didn’t get caught. On paper: great. In reality: social settings might be harder to deal with, because you would approach them in the same way. Just it’s not visible on paper.
If you didnt cheat and flunked: You’re a programmer who can stamp out code, and most likely unable to deal with anything else at work that is more theatrical than cold hard logic and math.
I always saw education (and most intelligent people do corroborate as well) as a training ground, not entirely for the substance taught, but to show that you can deal with it (your function 2, but more in the sense, given such problems, you will know how to approach them, and where to look for knowledge, because nobody remembers everything).
- Sirdubdee@piefed.socialEnglish3 months
Ah I had a different perspective in school. I had the guidance counselors sell me on how useful each class would be before I gave them my hard earned money. It’s expensive so I only wanted to buy valuable lessons.

- Yttra@lemmy.worldEnglish3 months
The piece of paper that companies keep demanding you have, despite their AI black box always filtering you out for hyper specific and arbitrary reasons?
The real answer is they’re probably just lazy, but I wouldn’t blame anyone who doesn’t really value the work that goes into their degrees and diplomas anymore (not that I’m against post-secondary education, though)
Gsus4@mander.xyzEnglish
3 monthsOh no, that is super fucking lazy (I’m not even sure the word for it is lazy…), they are literally copying the assignment statement into an LLM, pasting the answer without reviewing it (not even the slightest curiosity about what was written?) and they’re done?
- Kaligalis@lemmy.worldEnglish3 months
The problem isn’t that they cheat. It is that they are not doing proper QA when using AI.
Everyone will use AI (or AI-powered robots) in some way or another for basically everything in a few years. Companies banning AI will just disappear. People who see using AI as cheating will become unemployable.
But no one knows when the massive AI reliability issue will be fixed. It can be tomorrow, but it can also take years or maybe even forever. Until then, AI requires a human doing proper QA to make the results reliable in almost all cases.Doing QA mostly requires a completely different skill set and attitude than what the educational system teaches. That needs to change. Good QA is also important for doing anything without AI. But with AI, it’s almost the only thing left for a human to do.
Btw, the article is bullshit. When the students select the text to copy it, the white on white text becomes visible. That is when people intelligent enough to be able to use AI (and yeah, that bar is really low; AI is pretty easy to use) are usually detecting that there is something fishy going on.
- Dnb@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish3 months
How is the article bullshit? The people copying the question just didn’t bother to notice three extra highlighted part and remove it
- balsoft@lemmy.mlEnglish3 months
But also the problem is that they cheat.
Using AI is easy, as you note. You don’t need to go to college to learn to do that.
College can give you many useful skills, mostly related to gathering and processing information, and applying it to solve various issues. If you just copy-paste every question into AI and then copy-paste the answer back, you will learn absolutely nothing.
LLMs hallucinate and there’s nothing we can do to stop them. No amount of QA will fix that fundamental issue of “the LLM is somewhat likely to confidently produce incorrect information”, if you need the answer to be correct you have to do the research yourself, maybe based on the sources the LLM provided, not just sanity-check the output. This is a very useful skill to have for many jobs involving thinking or finding stuff out.
And even if we fix the hallucinations at some point by switching to a different tech (LOL), I do think it’s useful for people to keep some mental skills. Otherwise we will end up with a stupidity and/or dementia epidemics, similar to cars causing an obesity epidemic.

Driving towards obesity: A systematized literature review on the association between motor vehicle travel time and distance and weight status in adults
Highlights
- Over-reliance on private motor vehicles has likely contributed to the obesity epidemic.
- Evidence for a positive association between motor vehicle driving and weight status exists.
- Small, widespread, reductions in driving could provide significant population health benefits.
- 3 months
You’d have to be driving for 6 hours or more daily for it to make a significant impact :
By substituting sitting with standing for 6 hours/day, a 65 kg person will expend an additional 54 kcal/day. Assuming no increase in energy intake, this difference in energy expenditure would be translated into the energy content of about 2.5 kg of body fat mass in 1 year.

Almost a decade ago, I took a physics course online through my local community college. They made me take the final on-site in a secure testing facility, using their computer with a locked-down browser and a human to verify my identity.
If that was standard operating procedure for a community college a decade ago, I’m surprised that it’s not more universal at this point.

The problem was students insisted on lecture notes given to them. So…either we had a huge leap in human intelligence or most of my class cheated 2024, 2025. 5 A students never showed up. My colleagues in the US say it’s even worse. 2026 is back to the future: no shared lecture slides, 30% of lectures in chalk, no reading of notes in flipped instruction, quizzes on paper, no electronics allowed. Show up, take notes or flunk. I predict most students will drop the course in the first week. We have to do this because AI students are getting kicked out of graduate and medical schools in unprecedented numbers because eventually faking it bites them in the ass. High schools are encouraging getting a high number in courses by any means.
