Global warming will breach 1.5°C – but deep, fast cuts can still bring it back

With global temperature rise set to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, countries “must pull out all the stops” and urgently cut emissions to minimize the overshoot and return to the internationally agreed threshold by the end of this century.

Lot of doomerism in the comments, but actually China has probably already peaked in emissions and most of the world is electrifying fast. The only country that is a threat to the whole progress is the USA, but regardless of the clowns in charge, the USA is still making some progress

Deep, fast cuts? Not a chance of happening. The epstein class will dance as the world burns to make themselves slightly more obscenely wealthy and the average person will be happy to assist rather than having to change their lifestyle slightly. They got theirs and fuck future generations, right?

If we couldn’t get a critical mass of people on board a few decades ago when changes would have been easier to adjust to, how the hell can we get people to now?

The bring it back is also incorrect. Once emission stop completely things still get worse for 20 years or so due to lag, then, assuming no new tipping points carry us further, things may stabilize. If tipping points are reached, then we keep sliding down the slippery slope until we either find a new stability node or there is no one left to care. 4°C, 6°C? We don’t yet know, but I guarentee we’ll find out.

We’re headed for 3 or even 4 degrees. The version of ‘deep fast cuts’ We’re getting is data centers burning through seas of diesel, corruption stomping on clean energy progress in favor of petro-corp profits, and a global consumer base willing to save the planet, but only if they can sacrifice no comfort or convenience in the process.

We are heading for 3 degrees by 2050, that much seems pretty certain and baked in now. Past that is murky but given how little action has been taken so far it seems we will probably speed run up to 6C by 2100. Throughout this entire period we have followed the worst case scenario that everyone called unrealistic. Turns out the IPCC has been underplaying the impact of CO2 for 50 years. Humanity can’t change, unless we have a technological breakthrough this ends with only millions of humans left and most species on the planet extinct.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
