English is not my main language and I’m writing this on my phone so formatting could be all over the place, sorry.

Lilly = my friend // Sugar = her cat

This didn’t happen today, it actually happened about a year ago. To preface this: my friend Lilly and I are living 2 hours by car or train away from each other. With work and school we don’t get to see each other as much as we’d like.

Back then one of my friends cats, Sugar, was battling some health issues. She was born with some heart defect, so my friend always knew there was a chance that it would worsen over time.

We and our whole friend group tried to stay positive about it. One day we had a big get together, like 5 people crashing at Lilly’s place. When we left the next day everyone said their goodbyes and everyone cuddled Sugar in case there wouldn’t be a next time.

I cuddled Sugar and said something to the likes of “until next time” and Lilly was kinda depressed and voiced her concerns that Sugar wouldn’t make it this time. I stupidly tried to force positivity and said that I would refuse to say a final goodbye, since I was sure Sugar was going to make it and that I was looking forward to see them again in 3 weeks for our next visit.

One week later Sugar had to be put down because her lungs repeatedly filled with fluids and she couldn’t breathe and her heart was enlarged. Sugar was Lilly’s soul cat, she got a tattoo of her and still talks a lot about her.

We both had a very stressful time but we still text a lot. I never got the feeling that she was mad with me or disappointed or anything. I have only gotten around to visit her two times in the last year due to me switching jobs. Each time she somehow finds a way to remind me, that I refused to say goodbye to Sugar only for Sugar to not make it to our next meeting. I always feel some emotion swing with her words that I can’t put into words, almost accusatory or judgy but without malice.

I still feel like a complete ass.

TL;DR: tried to stay positive and refused to say final goodbye to ill cat, only to said cat die a week later
