    deep enough, below the water table. (if it even exists where you pick a location) no big deal. There’s worse things down there already than moderately low level radioactive metals. It’s not like we aren’t fracking underneath peoples homes now. releasing dangerous gasses, causing earthquakes, yada yada. That’s the other good part about the deep desert: it’s already inhospitable enough that people don’t gather there uniformly in great numbers. If you buy up some land and cordon it off, it’s not really screwing with people. What if you put it deep in the Sahara?

    When drilling is suddenly OK, then forego the nuclear reactor and go straight to geothermal.

    Geo is a great idea, sadly they have trouble getting it to scale, and locating hot enough pockets proves elusive. If you’re in volcanic areas, medium-sized geothermal is amazing. IIRC Iceland uses it to great effect but it doesn’t work just anywhere. We can’t drill so deep that it gets hot enough to make a difference; you need to find a spot where the crust is already thin.

    Now that’s not to be confused with geothermal at the house level for heatpumps, that is straight up awesome but works on a very different concept and can’t really scale at all… well it would be nice if all these fucking datacenters would use that instead of evaporative loops. but that’s a different story.

    • edit 2 looking at the carbon footprint of concrete, you’d spend more carbon drilling the hole and getting the waste to the hole than the plug you used to fill it. and you’d be able to store decades of terawatts of energy refuse in that hole
  • Relatively, yes, and not to mean somewhat. For the amount of power generated, the spent fuel/water is really not that significant.

    Nothing is purely clean. Making solar panels and batteries isn’t clean; it’s just that coal and natural gas are extremely dirty on a mass scale, environmentally speaking.

    If we could get the ‘big scare’ concept of Nuclear under control, we could make some systems that are even cleaner. There’s no apetite for that though.

  • Reliable teaching would be straightforward, but not cheap to set up. You wouldn’t want the models used to have the entire sum of the internet trained. Just verified clean data.

    You could start with textbooks, peer-reviewed studies, IC data from teachers, then add 20% reviewed, distilled content from a fully trained LLM. Set the whole thing up on rails. Curriculum, pacing, and testing would all be classical programming, architected by people, using a more widely trained LLM to sort out language and edge cases. New edge cases get human review. Set up a quorum of models that get hit on every request to sus-out errors. Backend is the source of truth, front end is not allowed to countermand the backend, and that’s tracked by another quorum.

    I think the biggest problem isn’t doing it, the biggest problem is not destroying society to get it done and not allowing society to take it over with an agenda. We can’t have the teachers disappear. It’s ripe for corpo/government manipulation. For something like this to work, you can’t have capitalism driving profits. You can’t have cults indoctrinating. It would all need to be very post Bell Riots Star Trek, and we KNOW that’ll never happen.

  • I was hoping AI would take us there. All the kids have computers. A guided LLM walks them through videos and concepts. tests them, lets them advance at their own pace.

    I wanted to zoom through the lessons, learn everything, but I didn’t want the awful college-prep bullshit or the high scrutiny of my essays. Did I understand the work? Yes, and that’s enough. I showed up to every class, knew what they asked, and aced tests.

    How cool would it be for every kid to be able to ask unlimited questions and be given different ways to understand a problem and its corresponding answer until they understood them properly?

    Set the text books and workbooks, guardrail the conversations. Double-check for incorrect assertions.

    Let them go and seek out on their own whatever subject they wanted at whatever time they wanted.

  • Samsung has encrypted profiles, apps have no problem advertising to you from knox.

    To do a complete phone backup like that all you need is Android root access. Root access on Android is, in fact, a little iffy. Any app given root access can basically read anything on the phone anywhere, keylog, remote execute, yada yada. The security landscape on android is a lot more flat than ios.

    Some ISP Vendors do have apps that let you sync android phones and back them up, it’s just not common and they go through a LOT less work to make sure your restores will work later.

  • It was ill-conceived, over-promised, and under-delivered.

    They’re huge. They’re ‘stainless’. They’re unibody. The drivetrain is expensive as shit. The tech innovations (digital door handles, controlless dash, bed cover are just wastes of money.

    He wanted to make an impregnable, floatable tank. They ended up cutting every corner on structure and putting that into form, but when they finished, the design and QC was so bad that it just failed all over.

    To fix everything that would be needed to cover the non-artistic issues, it would be the price of a large house instead of a small one.
