  • Thanks for the write up, really appreciate it :) Looking further I agree e-ink was a misplaced idea…

I’d like to reduce the number of potential fire points for this, so I’d look too spend $30 extra to have non battery powered devices if possible, but we’ll see.

  • Thanks for the comment! I did not have ESP32 on my radar at all until now.

I’m seeing a lot of AI slop articles on the HA forums, can you recommend any resources on the protocol, it’s control and anything to watch out for?

I’m looking for advice on setting up kiosks for a smart home.

I’d like to have 2-3 touch screens setup to control devices from.

I’ve decided on the following:

  • preferably plug in devices/screens (with no battery)
  • e-ink screens would be preferable but not a must
  • cost is a factor

Anyone had success in setting up something similar?

I typically avoid anything smart, but given practicality, I’m looking for general tips or recommendations for smart bulbs?

I have just started self-hosting home-assistant, and would prefer ones which integrate well with that.

What should I look out for when buying them? Any brands to avoid? Any cybersecurity concerns you’ve come across? Or should I avoid them altogether?

  • This is the hard part about batteries, which I think will lead to an eventual re-nationalisation of the grid. We all still need it to be able to deliver the same quality, but more and more people will be using it less of the time.

So cost of running doesn’t change, but charged revenue will decrease (maybe even exponentially) over the next year’s.

Not a personal attack at all, but do you see any realistic way to tackle this apart from raising base service fees?

  • This is cool and if you feel like posting more updates in the future, I personally would appreciate it.

It mirrors my own entry into self hosting these last years. Funnest one for me was spending 5 hours trying to log into my server after my IP “upgraded” for me, after they replaced it with a system with which the settings can only be modified via an app… 😊

But you live and learn and wait for the next headache!
