I wish I was excited like this the way I was for Oblivion. I hope it’ll be good, but I can wait for the reviews.
- joeschmoe@lemmy.worldEnglish2 days
There are still people looking forward to this after 76 and Starfield?

We are Bethesda fans, we are nothing if not nakedly delusional.
- codydodd@lemmy.caEnglish1 day
I legitimately thought fallout 4 was a wild ride and enjoyed every second of it. Including some of the extra content. Maybe they will have learned their lessons. Maybe unreal engine after the success of the oblivion remake?

Looking at Bethesda’s track record it’s gonna be shit regardless where it takes place
- WoodScientist@lemmy.worldEnglish2 days
Yeah, after Starfield, I’m not giving them the benefit of the doubt. I’ll wait until it’s out a few months before pulling the trigger on it.
- Riverview_Legal@lemmy.caEnglish2 days
Don’t worry. Bethesda will rely on the modding community to fix all the issues.
- 2 days
And then lock it all down before claiming all mods were their property and putting access behind a sub. 🤬
Don’t forget, y’all! “If buying isn’t owning”…
- Blemgo@lemmy.worldEnglish2 days
Not to mention that they keep “updating” their games even after their life cycles, which breaks some mods installed. And these “updates” basically adds nothing but stuff to the in-game store. Go look at the update posts for Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition, and see how they pretty much always have 0 upvotes but a massive amount of comments.
- 2 days
Yup. If “buying” it locks you under their bullshit “update” cycle, then why accept their terms at all?
- Hafler@lemmy.worldEnglish3 days
No idea why we are talking about Elder Scrolls VI when Skyrim really needs at least 8 more rereleases before it comes out.
- jtrek@startrek.websiteEnglish3 days
I expect not to buy it because fuck Microsoft. There are other games and other entertainments.
I expect I’m in the minority.
- Buddahriffic@lemmy.worldEnglish3 days
I’m not sure I even want it because their games were groundbreaking back in the 00s but the seams were showing by skyrim and Starfield especially.
The repeated use of the same cave or ruins layouts feels like a metaphor for their games themselves. The ways the games are realistic can even work against them because the other ways they are unrealistic ends up putting them in this RPG uncanney valley. Like stealth archers exploiting how the NPCs will react to getting shot but then just go back to what they are doing and forget about the arrow sticking out of them. Or how you can rob someone blind as long as they don’t see you actually grabbing the item. Or if you want to look at an item on display in a store or inn, the moment you touch it you’re treated as a theif and even a pet being present means guards are called.
Playing Starfield really drove it home. It was interesting at first until I got to the main city and that really drove home that this was just skyrim in space. Or not even, skyrim where you could teleport to other locations with your ship.
Maybe they finally have evolved it a bit and it’ll be better than what I’m expecting, but then there’s that Microsoft thing you brought up…
I’m probably also in the minority, but you’re not alone.

the seams were showing by skyrim and Starfield especially.
Hey now, both are pretty damn awesome after 200-400 mods, so ☝🏼😅
- Buddahriffic@lemmy.worldEnglish2 days
Were there any mods that improved NPC behaviour? Like anything that would make the NPCs not completely incompetent in handling a stealth archer, or even one just at a difficult to reach vantage point?
- 2 days
A slew of them improve NPC activity, from increased population sizes to threat assessment to “memory” retention (ie. recall you attacking/robbing them) to upgraded looks/mannerisms and dialogue options (even when there were none before), and so much more, yep. 🤘🏼
- Buddahriffic@lemmy.worldEnglish2 days
Might have to fire up skyrim again and give them a try. Also gives some hope for the new game, since iirc they have a bit of a habit of pulling a “I made this” on some of the more popular mods.
- 2 days
Yeah, they were the ones to take the lush community garden and infest it with carnivorous plants instead, and then started charging admission. Now, that’s all but default SoP everywhere. 🤢
FWIW, I’ve found it efficient to drop $5 for a month (set a reminder to cancel!) just to have said mods auto-install en masse vs one by one via countless clicks. Wabbajack’s had some issues, but there are dozens of other collections to try out. Have fun! 🖖🏼
- jtrek@startrek.websiteEnglish3 days
I would be shocked if the game was ground breaking. I fully expect more of the “NPCs just go back to default if you kill their buddy and wait a while” like we’ve had for 20 years. Plus all sorts of other jank and nonsense. I just don’t think Microsoft can pull off something new and great.
But even if they did: fuck em.
- Hemingways_Shotgun@lemmy.caEnglish1 day
My personal favourite is as long as it says “hidden” they won’t know you’re stealing from them while you three feet away.
The worst I ever saw was in Starfield. I had to hack a computer. Instead of waiting for him to leave his office I just knelt down behind his computer monitor until he couldn’t apparently see me…or remember I was just there…or hear me.
That lazy shit is so egregious in 2026. I’ve played mid-quality AA games with better NPCs (Greedfall and Elex come to mind)

I am not looking forward to that, its 2026, these backwards ass KKK fuckheads just need to crawl back under whatever rock they oozed out from under.
If Bethesda can somehow not mess this game up, it might be cool. Though, that’s unlikely. Given how much Bethesda magic (derogatory) that they still hold onto.

If it’s anything like yonder orcs on fertile fields being returned to the earth every day, I welcome the bumper crop of sunflowers on these lands, too.

Direct link. (It’s a few paragraphs in the middle of a larger post.)
Also, Gate to Sovngarde is worth a look for any PC players wanting to play an improved Skyrim in the meantime.

I can see it just fine. Maybe due to uBlock Origin. Maybe due to disabling javascript. Try those.
In any case, it is the direct link to the source, regardless of whether your browser setup has trouble with it.

It started with staying awhile to listen, and then the world discovered Tamriel.😍
Now, we’ve been staying awhile in the mod mgr and listening for the error msgs. 😝
